Program Description

The Early Childhood Care and Education program is a sequence of courses designed to prepare students for careers in child care and related fields such as childcare centers, family day care homes, group child care, Head Start programs, preschool programs, before- and after-school programs, and in-home care. Learning opportunities develop academic, technical, and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The program emphasizes a combination of early childhood care and education theory and practical application necessary for successful employment. Program graduates receive an Early Childhood Care and Education diploma and have the qualifications of early childhood care and education providers.

Length of Program

A full-time student can earn the 73 credit hours needed for program completion in five quarters. The fourth quarter is a full-time internship. Several of the ECCE courses are available online. 

Campus Location

The ECCE diploma is offered quarterly on the Ben Hill-Irwin and Coffee campuses.

Employment Opportunities

Childcare centers, family childcare homes, group childcare homes, Headstart programs, preschool programs, before- and after-school programs, and in-home care provide employment opportunities for graduates of the Early Childhood Care and Education diploma program.

Salary Range

The average annual salary range for ECCE graduates is $12,000 to $22,000.  

Personal Characteristics

To succeed in the ECCE program and a child care providing career, a person should enjoy children, have patience, possess excellent communication skills with adults and children, enjoy creative activities, have decision making skills, be able to spend long lengths of time being actively involved with children, and have a strong work ethic.
