Program Description

The Medical Assisting program prepares students for employment in a variety of positions in today’s medical offices. The Medical Assisting program provides learning opportunities which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. Additionally, the program provides opportunities to upgrade present knowledge and skills or to retrain in the areas of medical assisting. Graduates of the program receive a Medical Assisting diploma.

Length of Program

A total of 83 hours is required for graduation. A full-time student could expect to complete the program in five quarters. Completion time for part-time students will depend upon course load taken.

Campus Location

The Medical Assisting diploma program is offered on the Coffee Campus and new students are accepted each fall quarter. 

Employment Opportunities

Graduates may choose to find employment as a medical assistant in a clinic, hospital, or physician’s office. Because of the varied training, other job opportunities in office support positions could be available.

Salary Range

The average annual salary range for Medical Assisting graduates is $14,560 to $33,280.  


Personal Characteristics

To succeed as a medical assistant, individuals should demonstrate good interpersonal skills, enjoy assisting patients and physicians, follow medical instructions carefully, be able to work with individuals from various cultures, and be able to multi-task. They should possess good work ethics, customer service skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality regarding the medical site, patients, etc.

Entrance Requirements

Required Age: 17 years of age or older
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Placement exam required.

Required prior to externship:
1. Dental/physical exam (including TB testing)
2. Hepatitis B vaccination
3. Drug Screening
4. Health Care Provider CPR and First Aid Certification
5. Criminal background check may be required prior to externship
