Grading System / Grades
The following grading system is used at East Central Technical College:

    Grade Point
A (90-100) Excellent 4
B (80-89) Good 3
C (70-79) Satisfactory 2
D (60-69) Poor 1
F (0-59) Failing 0
WF Withdrawal Failing   0
WP Withdrawal Passing   NC (Not Computed)
W Withdrew   NC
I Incomplete   NC
TR Transfer Credit   NC
EX Credit by Exam   NC
AU Audit/Warranty Claim   NC
U Unsatisfactory   NC
S Satisfactory Completion   NC
IP In Progress (Institutional Credit Only) NC
AC Articulated Credit   NC

AC – Articulated Credit Articulated credit awarded should be indicated on transcript/permanent records, by the use of the letters AC.
I – Incomplete The grade I indicates that the student has a valid excuse for incomplete course work and that the work completed to date is considered passing at the time the I grade is issued.  The I grade automatically becomes an F grade and is so recorded if not removed by the end of the following grading period. If a grade of I is received in a course which is a prerequisite to subsequent courses, the student must complete the required work and receive a final grade to be eligible to enroll in the other courses.
IP – In Progress The grade IP indicates that course requirements necessitate an extension of time into the next quarter to complete course competencies. A student must be making satisfactory progress in a course and be up to date on all assigned course work at the time the IP is given. It may not be used to defer grade reporting more than one reporting period.
WP – Withdrawal Passing The grade of WP shall be assigned when the student officially withdraws from the school and was passing coursework at the time of withdrawal.
WF – Withdrawal Failing The grade of WF shall be assigned when the student officially withdraws from the school and was not passing coursework at the time of withdrawal.
W – Withdrew This indicates that a student withdrew without penalty before any grades had been earned.
TR – Transfer Credit This grade indicates course work accepted as transfer credit from another accredited postsecondary institution.
EX – Credit by ExaminationCredit by Competency Exam (EX) is used to indicate exemption for a course based on the results of testing. Academic credit is awarded but not calculated into the GPA.  Persons wishing to take an exemption exam must pay a nonrefundable fee prior to taking the exam. Fees are assessed at 25 percent of the regular rate of tuition for the prescribed number of credit hours received.
AU – Audit Students who wish to audit a course must obtain approval from the Director of Instruction and the program instructor prior to registration and payment of course fees. This audit status should be clearly noted on the Admissions Application at the time of registration.  Students who wish to change from audit to credit status may do so up to the midpoint of the quarter. Auditing students will be required to meet any or all of the course requirements such as attendance, examinations, and assignments. Auditing students will receive a grade of “AU” (non-credit) upon completion of the course.  Audit students will be required to pay all tuition and fees for any course or courses in which they enroll.
U – Unsatisfactory This symbol indicates unsatisfactory completion of course work.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

Each letter has a point value (i.e., A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1). A student may determine the grade points for each course by multiplying the number of points a grade is worth times the number of credit hours the course carries. Thus a “B” (worth 3 points) in a 3-credit-hour course is worth 9 grade points and an “A” (worth 4 points) in the same 3-credit-hour course is worth 12 grade points.

Example:

ENC 220 3 credit hours with an earned grade of A (4 points) = 12
SLC 201 3 credit hours with an earned grade of C (2 points) = 6
HOM 201 3 credit hours with an earned grade of F (0 points) = 0
ADP 280 1 credit hour with an earned grade of B (3 points) = 3

10 credit hours attempted, 21 total points earned
21 total points earned divided by 10 credits attempted = 2.1 Grade point average

A cumulative minimum grade point average of C (2.0) is required in order to earn a diploma at East Central Tech. The student should have a 2.0 grade point average in all work attempted.  While a student may earn a cumulative average of 2.0 which includes one or more grades of D, it is well to remember that grades below C are seldom transferable to other institutions and will prohibit progression to other courses for which the current course is a prerequisite. Students are required to successfully complete all competency areas of each course with at least an average of 70 percent. Neither Developmental Studies nor Work Ethics shall affect the cumulative grade point average. Students attending East Central Tech will not receive a grade report by mail for the quarter.  Grades can be accessed via Banner Web.
